A strong eruption on the sun has led to the red and green glowing effects in the atmosphere, which can otherwise only be seen in northern Scandinavia or on Iceland. The natural spectacle was particularly well visible in dark places in Brandenburg and Saxony-Anhalt. Photo: Cevin Dettlaff/dpa - 20230226_PD17421 - Rechteinfo: Rights Managed (RM)

Auroras are an atmospheric phenomenon that occur at high latitudes, appearing as shimmering bands of coloured light in the sky. They occur when charged particles in the solar wind are directed towards the poles by Earth's magnetic field. There they collide with atoms in the upper atmosphere, causing them to emit light. The colour of the light depends on the atmospheric gas involved. - 20230224_PD3211 - Rechteinfo: Rights Managed (RM)

  • This is the first image of Saturn's ultraviolet aurora taken by the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) on board the Hubble Space Telescope in October 1997, when Saturn was a distance of 810 million miles (1.3 billion kilometers) from Earth. The new instrument, used as a camera, provides more than ten times the sensitivity of previous Hubble instruments in the ultraviolet. STIS images reveal exquisite detail never before seen in the spectacular auroral curtains of light that encircle Saturn s north and south poles and rise more than a thousand miles above the cloud tops.
5 /5 Es gibt sie nicht nur auf der Erde, wie dieses Hubble-Bild des Saturns aus dem Jahr 1997 eindrücklich zeigt.
