The EU Council on 04 June 2021 in a press release announced to strengthen the sanctions against Belarus and to ban Belarusian carriers from overflight of EU airspace and and access to EU airports. It comes in a follow-up to the European Council conclusions when the unlawful forced landing of a Ryanair flight in Minsk on 23 May 2021 and detention of Belarus' opposition journalist Protasevich was condemned.
