September 19, 2023, Lampedusa, Pelagic Islands, Italy: Another 77 migrants arrived in Lampedusa after the two boats on which they were traveling were rescued by the Guardia di Finanza V827 patrol boat, in the port of Lampedusa. On board were Egyptians, Bengalis, Syrians, Ethiopians and Sudanese departing from Zuwara and Sfax. Up to six, from the last 13 hours, the landings in Lampedusa, for a total of 262 people. Part of massive surge of migrants have been pushing local facilities. According to Italy's Interior Ministry, nearly 126,000 immigrants and refugees have entered the country as of 2023, double same time period in 2022. Boats arriving from Tunisia carrying citizens of various African nations, including Ivory Coast, Guinea, Cameroon, Burkina Faso, Mali and Tunisians themselves. Many lived and worked in Tunisia for years. What is behind the surge? The socio-economic situation in Tunisia is spiraling with high inflation, lack of jobs. President Saied remarks have fueled anti-migrant sentiment, particularly against sub-Saharan Africans. Tunisia is now the main launching pad for Europe. Lampedusa, is closer to North Africa than the Italian mainland is receiving around 70 percent of all migrants arriving in Italy, said F.
