Dead fish float in the river Oder close to Widuchowa (Poland). After thousands of dead fish were recovered in Poland and Germany from the River Oder, the cause of the fish kill remains unclear. While environmental toxins and heavy metals were initially suspected, this could largely be ruled out. Researchers at the Leibniz Institute of Freshwater Ecology and Inland Fisheries (IGB) have identified a microalgae known to occasionally cause fish kills. The fish kill was also accompanied by an unusually high increase in salt loads in the water, the cause of which remains unclear. The first dead fish were already reported around August 10 in Frankfurt (Oder, Germany).
