There are some 870.000 bee colonies in Germany, which produce 25.000 tons of honey. Once there used to be 560 species of bees in Germany. Today half of them are either extinct or endangered. The animals are threatened by viruses or parasites like the varroa mite. The use of pesticides, large-scale monocultures and several so-called neonicotinoids are partly responsible for the reduction of the insects.
