Smallpox was long considered one of the most dangerous diseases for humans. Vaccines saved the day, and since 1980 the world has been considered free of smallpox. In the meantime, more and more countries are reporting evidence and suspected cases of monkeypox. There is no approved vaccination specifically against monkeypox. According to historical data, however, a smallpox vaccination provides good protection against monkeypox - and probably for life.
